Travel Companion Project

The Southern Mallee Transport Connections Partnership (SMTCP) has developed a small transport project, that will assist people to use public transport to attend medical appointments in Bendigo or Melbourne.  As part of this project, passenger will be able to utilize public transport and will be accompanied by a volunteer, who will assist them throughout their journey.

Eligible Passengers

The eligible passengers for this project will include: frail, aged, disabled and/or ill people who require assistance whilst using public transport to attend a medical appointment.

Coordinating Agency

The Swan Hill Neighbourhood House will coordinate this project for the Swan Hill area, and will undertake the following tasks:

·      accept referrals and undertake an assessment (if required),

·      assign a volunteer to assist the client,

·      coordinate and book the relevant bus or train journey for the passenger and volunteer,

·      liaise with Traveller’s Aid (buggy service),   &

·     provide advice regarding travel subsidies.

Outcomes

The SMTCP believes that this project will assist people to use public transport, instead of having to rely upon the goodwill of friends, neighbours and Ambulance Victoria.  The SMTCP also believes that the project will provide valuable data for the Department of Planning and Community Development, when considering possible changes to the criteria of the Companion Card.

Costs

All passengers must purchase their own travel ticket, as well as an additional ticket for the volunteer.  In many cases the passenger will be able to apply for a travel subsidy for both tickets through the Department of Human Services (VPTAS program).  It is important in these instances that the passenger and specialist completes a relevant subsidy form.  More information is available in the 'Subsidies / Assistance' section of this website.

Volunteers

The Swan Hill Neighbourhood House needs volunteers, in order to trial this project.  If you are interested in volunteering for this role, then please telephone Lea Johnson on 5032 1549.  All volunteers will be given a small voucher, in order to compensate for any out of pocket expenses incurred whilst undertaking their volunteer role.

Start Date

This project will begin its trial in early March, 2010.   For further information, please contact the Southern Mallee Transport Connections Partnership on 545 333 89.
